Sara's Funeral: Song I Sang: Be Still My Soul (I love the Lord)

This is the song I sang at my sister's funeral two years ago.

I Love The Lord (Be Still My Soul)

I love the Lord, in Him my soul delights.
Upon His word, I ponder day and night.
He's heard my cry, brought visions to my sleep,
And kept me safe o'er deserts and the deep.
He's filled my heart with His consuming love,
And borne me high on wings of His great dove.

  1. 1. Be still, my soul: The Lord is on thy side;
With patience bear thy cross of grief or pain.
    Leave to thy God to order and provide;
In ev'ry change he faithful will remain.
Be still, my soul: Thy best, thy heav'nly Friend
Thru thorny ways leads to a joyful end.
  2. 2. Be still, my soul: Thy God doth undertake
To guide the future as he has the past.
    Thy hope, thy confidence let nothing shake;
All now mysterious shall be bright at last.
Be still, my soul: The waves and winds still know
His voice who ruled them while he dwelt below.
  3. 3. Be still, my soul: The hour is hast'ning on
When we shall be forever with the Lord,
When disappointment, grief, and fear are gone,
Sorrow forgot, love's purest joys restored.
Be still, my soul: When change and tears are past,
All safe and blessed we shall meet at last.

Poetry of my Brother-in-law and Sister

I think this poem was more written by my brother-in-law, Clyde Buff; although it is given as from both he and my sister, Sara.  It was written for the funeral of their grandson Forrest.

Touched by an Angel

Few of us ever have the blessing
Of being touched by an angel on earth,
But Forrest was one of God's special sons
Sent to touch all our lives here on earth.

From him we learned just what real strength was
Real strength as he fought through each trial
He never gave in, never let the pain win
He touched our lives with his angelic smile.

We all felt the touch of his patience
The touch of his "I love you" gaze
And his love will last though his time her is past
He touched us all in so many ways

How does it feel to be touched by and angel?
Ask those who knew Forrest well
They all know for sure, Forrest's love will endure
In their hearts where the sweetest memories dwell.

Yes we all have been touched by an angel
We than God for Forrest's brief stay here below
May his touch linger on though his mortal journey is done
He is the truest little angel we know

With all our love

Moving Experience by: Charlie Wardle

Moving [Packing] Experience by Charlie Wardle
There’s one moving experience that happened when we had everything loaded and were about ready to leave.  [This is Utah to Illinois.]  I grabbed Dale’s key (Dale was a friend of Sara’s)  [Dale Nelson was Sara’s boyfriend before we moved] out of his truck and threw them into the field next to our house.  The worse thing about it was that we couldn’t find them.   We had to “hot wire” the truck so Dale could take a load of furniture to the Deseret Industries for us.
I remember that Dad gave me a big spanking for losing Dale’s keys.

Mother Keeping Track of Her Kids

Mother Keeping Track of Her Kids by: Ileen Wardle
Living on a big farm, a mother had a hard time keeping track of her kids.  The next two stories are about mother trying to keep track of her kids.  These stories are told by my mother.
One day, Billy came up missing.  I looked everywhere for him for hours and couldn’t find him.  Usually when Billy was missing, you could find him in the strawberry patch, but he wasn’t there.
I found Jim, my husband, and told him that Billy was missing.  He got some of the hired hands and we all went looking for Billy.  My biggest worry was that he might have fallen in the canal.  After looking for him for awhile we found him fast asleep in the corn patch.
my version of the same story

There was a time when Sara and Connie came up missing.  After looking for them for awhile I found them in the machine shed watching a mother cat have her kittens.  The must have been there for hours.
I was so embarrassed when I saw this and they had so many questions about where those kitten were coming from.  I really had to do some fast explain about birth.

Sara Jane Wardle Buff: Wedding Pictures

Sara was the oldest, and she was also the first to get married.  She married Clyde Eugene Buff whom she had met in Carbondale, Illinois.  She married one day after her 19th birthday, and a couple months after we moved back to Hyrum, Utah October 9, 1969.  Her reception was held at our home.  People came in the front door and the line was in our living room.  They would then go down the stairs where there were tables set up in the family room.  Me and my brothers were responsible to take the presents from people and put them on a table.  These are a few pictures from her wedding.

Charlie Wardle Our job was to greet people at the door. If they had presents we had to take them to the table in the kitchen. I was doing a good job until Aunt Sara Prestwich gave me a kiss. I got in trouble for wiping it off saying yuck. After that I stayed away from those older ladies that wanted to give a little boy a kiss.  Billy:  I remember gathering the presents, but I don't remember the kisses.

Billy's History 1967, 18 stitches

Billy’s Head, by Billy
August 1967

Sara was in charge of us, one time while Mom and Dad were away.  I and the younger kids, Charlie and Dianna, discovered a new game.  We took the cushions from the couch and put them on the floor at the bottom of the stairs, and then we proceeded to jump off the stairs onto the cushions.  We jumped from the third stair, and then the fourth and slowly, as our confidence increased kept adding stairs.  We eventually were jumping from the top of the stairs onto the cushions.  We were having a great deal of fun.
After we had been enjoying ourselves for sometime, Sara discovered our game and told us to quit jumping down the stairs—that it was dangerous.  I told her we would stop after one more jump.  I wanted to make this jump the best jump ever.  I jumped higher than I had before, and struck my head against the ceiling which came down about half way down the stairs.
I saw stars, like in the cartoons.  I had cracked my head pretty good.  I had to go into Logan to the hospital and was put back together with 18 stitches.  They wrapped my head in gauze, which made me look something like a mummy.
I still have a dent in my head and a big scar under my scalp.  I was worried about going bald and the scar showing.  Fortunately I have not gone bald yet.  I also dented the roof.  There was a metal beam under the paint, and this showed for some time.  It has since been repaired, and the roof repainted; but the wave on my scalp is permanent.
